Polytechnic High School – Champions and Scholars – Utility Box

Public Art Utility Box located at the corner of
Martin Luther King Blvd and 17th. Long Beach, Ca.

This was such a great project to do!

There is A LOT of pride in that high school – It was really cool experience meeting so many folks that were so excited about the art being there 🙂 Although, I had to tell everybody that I went to Wilson. It was pretty funny.
Commission art work by the Neighborhood Service Bureau City of Long Beach.

Octopus with Ship – “Live Art” Painting

This is a LIVE ART painting. Created (almost entirely) at the Talk Like a Pirate Day event. Live art always has a bit of in-the-moment rawness to it.

“Naut-O-pus” – Acrylic on Canvas

The Naut-o-pus”
Painting Acrylic on Canvas
16″ x 20″

The joy of painting returned on this piece!
I let the drawing lead me – instead the me leading the drawing.

In the initial sketch an octopus turned spontaneously into a nautilus – well…SORT OF
Hence the funny name Naut-o-pus
(both but neither species)

Fred’s Afro Tree – Acrylic on Canvas Panel

Fred’s Afro Tree
20″ x 16″
Acrylic on 2 inch canvas Panel

Statement:
This beautiful HUGE Ficus Tree living across the street from me in front of  Fred’s house.
That tree is one the reasons I picked my home.
In the world of sameness – there is something magnificent. That old tree that is crowned naturally in a round grand afro and has all these intertwined shapes. Love that tree 🙂

Elephant

Acrylic Painting on masonite
24″w x 18″h

An elephant in a transparent suit of armor steadies himself on a very small stand. A controlled orderly background emphasizes the inability for the elephant to move, lest he lose his balance.

Catalina Grey Fox – Painting

Acrylic painting on a masonite panel
of a Catalina Grey Fox.

This little guy is an endangered species.

6″ width x 6″ height x 1/8 depth

Corgi Portrait – Erin and Chloe

These Corgi’s are sisters. Can you tell by the portrait who is the dominate dog? Just like painting a portrait of people, I try to capture the “real deal” of  personality in subjects.
The front dog Chloe is a diva – beautiful and dominate, Erin is the sweet pea – smiling in the back.
Painting is 30″ x 24 – Acrylic on Canvas

Spider and the Fly

Acrylic on Wood Panel
18”w x 24” h
“Step into my parlor said the spider to the fly”
What a great opening line for a poem!
This painting is a re-created memory so to speak.
I had an illustrated book of poems as a child _ and this was my
favorite. I read and re-read and stared at the picture. All I really remember now, was the dark green.

Eva’s Garden

Eva’s Garden is part of the Bordello’s and Boudoir series. The series depicts women of the early 1900 that posed for French postcards. It is interesting to me what signifies beauty in different time periods.

Murals – Will Rogers Bayside Academy

2007 – A set of four indoor murals commissioned by Will Rogers Bayside Academy. The murals were designed to engage the students and the faculty. Will Rogers architecure is in art deco style, and also contains a depression-era federally commissioned mural. I wanted to incorporate these elements as well. The “Ocean” mural pays homage to the federal mural which also depicts marine life –  and each mural has a Deco style border.
